The client, according to postmodern approaches of psychotherapy, is considered as the main source of solutions for his problems and as the protagonist and director in the ‘dance’ of the psychotherapeutic relationship. Long-term studies have shown that the average treated person is better off than 80% of those without the benefit of therapy (Asay & Lambert, 1999, Wampold 2001 as quoted by Duncan, Miller & Sparks in ‘Heroic Client’, 1st edition, 2004, p.9)
The position that I prefer in this ‘dance’ is that of the ‘not knowing expert’. I try to privilege to the client’s knowledge, experience and ideas that aim to improve their life and to address their problems. I try to contribute in this direction by using my own ideas with a lot of caution and respect, acknowledging thus the expert knowledge of the client for their own life.
